The Battle

History & Significance

Charles I was transferred to Carisbrooke Castle on the Isle of Wight in November 1647, having escaped from Hampton Court and surrendering himself to Colonel Robert Hammond, governor of the island — unwisely, as Hammond was loyal to Parliament. Charles made repeated escape attempts that all failed (he became stuck in window bars twice). The Engagement he made with the Scots while at Carisbrooke triggered the Second Civil War. The Isle of Wight remained a parliamentary stronghold and Charles was eventually transferred to the mainland for his trial.
