History & Significance

The alliance of the pagan Mercian king Penda with the Christian Welsh king Cadwallon destroyed the Northumbrian army at Hatfield Chase (near Doncaster). Edwin, the most powerful English king of his generation and the first Christian king of Northumbria, was killed with his son Osfrith. The battle temporarily shattered Northumbria and led to devastating ravaging of Yorkshire by Cadwallon before Oswald reconquered the kingdom at Heavenfield.
