History & Significance

The Mercian Register records that Aethelflaed sent an army into Brycheiniog (Brecon) in 916, after an abbot and his companions were killed there. The Mercian force destroyed the crannog of Brecenanmere (Llangorse Lake), capturing the Welsh queen and thirty-three others. The raid demonstrated Aethelflaed willingness to project force west into Wales as well as north into the Danelaw. The campaign secured the southern Mercian flank before her major northern campaigns.
