The Battle

History & Significance

After Mary escaped from Lochleven, the Regent Moray marched from Glasgow to intercept the Marian army at Langside. Moray's approach from the west through Glasgow forced the Marians to commit to battle on ground they had not chosen. Moray deployed his arquebusiers and cavalry to dominate the ridge at Langside village while the Hamiltons attempted a frontal advance up the lane. The battle lasted less than 45 minutes. Mary watched from a nearby hill and fled south into England never to return.
