History & Significance

The 'Commotion Time' of 1549 — when risings occurred across England simultaneously — saw unrest in the Midlands connected to enclosure grievances. The Midlands had particular problems with sheep enclosure displacing arable farming. While Kett's Rebellion in Norfolk and the Western Rising in Devon were the most dramatic events, Leicestershire and Northamptonshire saw local disorders. The Midlands uprisings were suppressed without major battle by local gentry and Crown forces.
