During the Welsh revolt of Madog ap Llywelyn in 1294, Harlech Castle was isolated and besieged by Welsh forces. The newly completed Edwardian castle was garrisoned by a small English force. The supply route by sea from Ireland proved essential to maintaining the garrison through the siege. The castle held through the revolt and remained in English hands, validating Edward I s strategic decision to place it on the coast.
