The Battle

History & Significance

Eadred launched a punitive expedition into Northumbria in 948 in response to the acceptance of Eirik Bloodaxe. He burned the minster at Ripon during the campaign. However, on the return march the Northumbrian army attacked his rearguard at Castleford and inflicted serious losses. Eadred threatened to devastate Northumbria entirely unless Eirik was expelled. The Northumbrians complied and expelled Eirik, though they readmitted him in 952.
