The Battle

History & Significance

After the long night march from Kingston, Wyatt's dwindling and exhausted army reached Ludgate Hill in London. He expected London's gates to open but they remained shut. Wyatt sat down on a bench at Temple Bar in exhaustion and surrendered. He was taken to the Tower, tortured, and executed. The rebellion's failure strengthened Mary's position and confirmed her marriage to Philip of Spain.
