Athelstan met the Welsh kings at Hereford in 927 and imposed tribute terms: the Chronicle records gold, silver, cattle, hounds, and hawks. Hywel Dda of Deheubarth became a regular attendant at Athelstan court and a consistent ally. The Hereford submission established the model of Welsh subordination that would persist through later Anglo-Saxon reigns. Hywel was permitted to rule Wales as a sub-king rather than having it directly annexed.
