The Battle

History & Significance

Rye ancient obligations as a Cinque Port required it to provide ships and men for the crown in time of naval emergency, and in 1588 the town fulfilled these obligations by contributing vessels to the fleet and reinforcing Camber Castle garrison. The Cinque Port system, though much reduced from its medieval heyday, still provided a useful network of maritime communities along the Kent and Sussex coasts that could be rapidly mobilised in a naval emergency.
