In January 1746, while the Jacobite army besieged Stirling Castle, the town of Falkirk served as an important Jacobite supply and billeting centre. Government cavalry patrols from Edinburgh and the approaching Hawley's army contested control of the Falkirk area. Minor skirmishing in the town preceded the Battle of Falkirk Muir on 17 January 1746. The battle itself was fought on the moor south of the town. Falkirk town saw the Jacobite army march through it before and after the battle, and served as a rallying point after the victory.
