History & Significance

Kelso on the Scottish Borders was the junction point where the Border Jacobites (mainly Scots Episcopal families) joined the English northern Jacobites under Thomas Forster. The combined force then marched south through Cumberland and Lancashire. The Kelso muster on 22 October 1715 brought together perhaps 1,500 cavalry under the Earl of Kenmure and Forster before the fateful march to Preston. Minor skirmishing with government scouts occurred on the Border.
