The Battle

History & Significance

The rebels penetrated Norwich through the Bishopsgate area and the Tombland district near the cathedral in mid-July 1549, briefly seizing control of much of the city before the Marquess of Northampton arrived. The rebels used the river crossing at Bishopsgate to pour men into Norwich, demonstrating the inadequacy of the city defences against a determined assault of this scale.
