History & Significance

In retaliation for Northumbrian acceptance of Eric Bloodaxe, Eadred ravaged all of Northumbria, burning the great minster at Ripon. As the English army withdrew south, a Northumbrian force caught Eadred's rearguard at Castleford (Ceasterford) and killed many men. Eadred turned threatening to return and waste Northumbria completely, at which the Northumbrians gave back Eric and paid compensation.
