The Battle

History & Significance

In the autumn of 1308, having secured the north, Bruce turned south to deal with Galloway which had opposed him since 1307. The Galwegians under the MacDowalls and local English-aligned lords were crushed in a systematic campaign; the region was subjected and its leaders killed or expelled. The subjugation of Galloway removed the last significant centre of Scottish opposition to Bruce and the threat to his southern flank posed by English supporters operating from the Solway coast.
