History & Significance

The last Jacobite victory — and the last battle to be fought in Scotland before Culloden two months later. General Hawley was so confident of victory he did not interrupt his dinner when told the Highlanders were attacking. The Highland charge broke the government line. Hawley's abandoned dinner table became legendary. Culloden soon reversed everything.
