History & Significance

Edward built two fortified burhs at Hertford, one on each side of the River Lea at its junction with the Beane and Mimram. This was the beginning of Edward systematic northward advance, pushing fortified towns into the frontier zone. The Chronicle records the Danes from Hertford and East Anglia submitted to him after the construction. The twin-burh strategy at river junctions was a signature feature of Edward campaign.
