History & Significance

A skirmish between French cavalry from the Leith garrison and Protestant lords near Dalmahoy Hill west of Edinburgh during the Reformation crisis of 1559. French horse made periodic sorties from Leith to harass Protestant convoys and intercept communications between Edinburgh and the west. The Dalmahoy encounter was one of several such outpost actions that characterised the low-intensity warfare around Edinburgh during the autumn and winter of 1559-60.
