History & Significance

Lord Aboyne commanding Royalist cavalry operations in Angus took Forfar from a small Covenanting garrison in 1645. The action was part of Montrose effort to extend Royalist control from the northeast into Angus and Perthshire after the victories of the main campaign. The town was held briefly before Covenanting counter-pressure forced withdrawal.
