The Battle

History & Significance

In April 1650 Montrose landed in Orkney with a small force of Scandinavian mercenaries and Scottish exiles to begin his final campaign for Charles II. He mustered additional troops at Stracathro in Angus before advancing north into Ross-shire. The muster at Stracathro was his last chance to build a viable Scottish royalist force but the numbers were too small and the Covenanting government too alert.
