History & Significance

Jedburgh Castle in Roxburghshire, a former royal burgh and administrative centre, was occupied by English forces during the 1296 campaign. Its position on the key road north from England made it a critical chokepoint; the English garrison controlled the Jed Water valley and could monitor movement throughout the eastern Borders. The castle would later be demolished by the Scots in 1409 to prevent re-occupation.
