History & Significance

After the Battle of Dunbar in September 1650, Cromwell's English army occupied Edinburgh but could not initially reduce Edinburgh Castle, held by a Covenanting garrison under Governor Walter Dundas. The castle held out until December 1650 when it surrendered after a prolonged blockade. Its garrison was treated honourably. The Castle's fall completed English control of Edinburgh.
