History & Significance

Coventry was a crucial Parliamentary stronghold in the Midlands. When Charles I tried to enter the city in 1642, the citizens refused him — 'sending him to Coventry' is sometimes said to derive from this incident (though the phrase's etymology is disputed). The city served as the principal Parliamentary base in the West Midlands and provided essential supplies, money, and troops to the Parliamentary war effort throughout the conflict. Its walls were maintained in readiness for potential Royalist assault that never materialised.
