History & Significance

The Great Heathen Army drove Burgred of Mercia from his throne in 874, installing the puppet king Ceolwulf II in his place. Burgred fled to Rome and died there. The expulsion of Burgred ended the independent Mercian kingdom. The Danes split Mercia in 877, giving the eastern half to themselves and the western half to Ceolwulf.
