History & Significance

Olaf the White and his Norse-Irish fleet used the river systems of Scotland for deep penetration raids. The Tay allowed longships to reach as far inland as Perth, the heart of the Kingdom of Alba. These river raids in the 860s coincided with the period of Norse maximum aggression across northern Europe and put the early Scottish kingdom under existential pressure.
