History & Significance

The English constructed a permanent fortification at Lauder in Berwickshire as one of several forward bases to hold the Scottish Borders during the Rough Wooing. The fort at Lauder commanded the Leader Water valley and road to Edinburgh. Scottish forces repeatedly raided its supply lines. The chain of English forts at Lauder, Dunglass, Roxburgh, and Home Castle represented an attempt to permanently garrison southern Scotland — the most ambitious English attempt to hold Scottish territory since Edward I.
