History & Significance

After the fall of Derby in 917, the Danish garrison of Leicester submitted to Aethelflaed without major fighting, according to the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle. The submission was a profound sign of how rapidly Mercian power had reasserted itself in the Danelaw heartland. The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle also records that the York Danes sent envoys to offer submission — though Aethelflaed died before she could receive York\'s allegiance. Leicester\'s fall gave the Mercians control of the Soar valley and Ermine Street.
