The Battle

History & Significance

Perkin Warbeck, the Yorkist pretender supported by Burgundy and later Scotland, attempted to land at Deal with a force of mercenaries in July 1495. An advance party came ashore but was cut down by local Kentish levies. Warbeck himself watched from his ship and fled without landing. The episode showed both Henry VII's efficient coastal defence and the failure of the Yorkist cause to attract popular support in England.
