History & Significance

Malcolm III took advantage of the political crisis in England -- the conflict between the Godwinsons and the Crown -- to annex Cumbria, or at least assert Scottish dominance there. The region had a mixed population with strong Scottish cultural connections. Malcolm's action extended Scottish territory and gave him a buffer zone protecting his southern flank.
