The Fowey blockhouse defences garrisoned in 1540 directly addressed the catastrophic vulnerability exposed by the French sack of 1457, when the town was burned and its ships seized. The twin blockhouses on each side of the harbour entrance, working in conjunction with St Catherine Castle, created an effective defensive crossfire that would prevent any repetition of the 1457 attack. Fowey was a major embarkation port for English expeditions to France.
