The Battle

History & Significance

The Confederate lords confronted Mary and Bothwell at Carberry Hill east of Edinburgh. Both armies faced each other all day in intense heat but no battle occurred. Mary's supporters melted away when it became clear the lords would not back down. Bothwell offered single combat — refused or unfought — and escaped. Mary surrendered to the lords and was imprisoned in Lochleven Castle. It was the military end of Mary's reign though no blow was struck.
