The Battle

History & Significance

A separate Danish army crossed from the Continent and besieged Rochester in Kent in 884. The Rochester garrison held behind the Roman walls and Alfred marched rapidly to relieve the city. The Danish army fled at Alfred's approach, abandoning siege equipment and horses. Alfred then won a naval skirmish at the mouth of the Stour. The episode demonstrated Alfred's growing ability to project military power rapidly.
