History & Significance

Aethelflaed, Lady of the Mercians, ordered the repair of the Roman walls of Chester in 907, creating a burh that would resist Norse raids from the Irish Sea. Norse raiders from Dublin had been attacking the north-west coast and Chester provided the key defensive anchor. The Chronicle of Aethelweard and the Mercian Register both record the restoration. Chester remained an English stronghold throughout the Norse attempts to control the north-west.
