History & Significance

The 835 raid on Sheppey is the first recorded Viking attack in Kent and among the earliest sustained Viking raids in southern England. A large Danish fleet ravaged the Isle of Sheppey and plundered the coastal settlements. The attack heralded a new era of sustained Viking pressure on Kent, the Thames estuary and London that would intensify over the following decades.
