The Battle

History & Significance

English forces seized Broughty Castle at the mouth of the Tay in 1547 to create a second front in the Rough Wooing, threatening Dundee and providing a base for raids into Angus and Fife. The Scots besieged the castle repeatedly but it held until the broader peace of 1550. The garrison made use of English naval control of the Tay to supply itself and launch coastal raids, keeping eastern Scotland in a state of alarm throughout the occupation.
