History & Significance

Penda supported Oswiu's destruction of Oswine of Deira. Oswine raised an army but seeing he was outnumbered he dismissed his forces and went into hiding with a loyal thegn, who betrayed him. He was killed by Oswiu's men at Gilling in Yorkshire. His murder shocked contemporaries and led to the foundation of a minster at Gilling in expiation.
