The Battle

History & Significance

Before attacking the Druid sanctuary at Mona, Paulinus spent two campaign seasons systematically reducing Ordovician resistance in mid and north Wales. He cut roads through the uplands, built fort chains along the Vyrnwy and Dee valleys, and drove Roman military power to the foot of Snowdonia. Only when supply routes were secured did he advance on Anglesey. His recall by Boudicca news before finishing the job left a problem that Frontinus and Agricola had to resolve.

Forces Involved

Full complement of two or three legions with extensive auxiliary force; methodical road-and-fort campaign
