The Chronicle records that in 919 Edward went to Thelwall and ordered a burh to be built and garrisoned, while another section of his army repaired and garrisoned Manchester in Northumbrian territory. This push to the Mersey represented the extension of English power deep into the north-west, challenging Norse control of the area. Thelwall on the Mersey completed the northern defensive line alongside Chester and Runcorn.
