The Battle

History & Significance

After the failure of his street march, Essex retreated to his house on the Strand and briefly released hostages he had taken. When royal troops surrounded the building and artillery was brought up, he surrendered after a few hours. The ease of the siege's conclusion illustrated the futility of the entire enterprise — Essex had neither the military resources nor the popular support for a serious rebellion. His subsequent trial and execution effectively ended the career of the old Essex faction at Elizabeth's court.
