A Norse fleet operating in the Bristol Channel struck the coast of Gower around 896. The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle records Danish naval activity throughout the Bristol Channel in this period. The Gower peninsula with its exposed coastline and rich lowland farms was repeatedly targeted by Norse raiders. The raids contributed to the abandonment of coastal sites and the inland retreat of Welsh settlement in Gower.
