History & Significance

Queen Margaret sailed to Scotland in 1462 and negotiated with Mary of Guelders, regent for the young James III, for military support. She pledged Berwick to Scotland in exchange for an army to recover Northumberland. The Scottish intervention seized the Northumberland castles and briefly threatened to overturn the Yorkist position in the north.
