The Battle

History & Significance

Tacitus records that the Ordovices destroyed a Roman cavalry ala shortly before Agricola arrived as governor. Agricola immediately launched a punitive campaign without waiting to gather his full force, destroying virtually the entire Ordovices tribe in battle. Tacitus uses the word prope universos — almost the entire people — suggesting mass slaughter. Agricola then retook Anglesey without boats, using the tide.
