History & Significance

After the destruction of Edwin at Hatfield Chase the West Saxons attempted to resist Mercian and Welsh expansion. A West Saxon action near the River Frome in Somerset is recorded in some sources in the chaotic period 633-634. The collapse of Northumbrian overlordship briefly enabled Mercia to press westward against Wessex.
