The Throckmorton Plot of 1583 was a precursor to the Babington Plot and part of the wider pattern of Spanish-backed Catholic conspiracies against Elizabeth. Walsingham uncovered the plot through informers. The arrest and torture of Throckmorton exposed the network including the Spanish ambassador Mendoza who was expelled. The plot accelerated the Bond of Association and hardened Elizabethan anti-Catholic legislation.
