Caersws in Powys was established as a large auxiliary fort commanding the junction of the Severn and Carno rivers — the main route into the heart of Wales from the east. The fort covered over 5 acres and could hold a milliary cohort. It was repeatedly refurbished through the Roman period, demonstrating sustained Ordovician resistance that required a permanent strong garrison.
