The Battle

History & Significance

Following his coronation at Bath in 973, Edgar the Peaceful was rowed on the River Dee at Chester by eight subject kings including Kenneth II of Scotland, Malcolm of Strathclyde, and several Welsh rulers. This ceremony of rowing was an elaborate submission ritual demonstrating Edgar s supremacy. No battle was required because Edgar s military reputation and the size of his fleet made resistance unthinkable.
