History & Significance

Offa progressively tightened control over the East Saxon kingdom through the 780s and 790s, granting away Essex lands to Mercian churches and imposing Mercian overlordship on the East Saxon kings. The East Saxon kings became subordinate figures in Mercian charters. By the time of Offa's death Essex was effectively part of the Mercian kingdom.
