The Battle

History & Significance

Part of the chaotic Pictish succession struggles of the 720s. Multiple claimants fought for the kingship — Nechtan IV, Drest, Alpín mac Feredach, and eventually Oengus I all contested the throne within a few years. The Mountain of the Cairn (Cairn o' Mount) in the Grampians was the site of one of these succession battles before Oengus I emerged supreme.
