History & Significance

The Council of Wales and the Marches, reorganised by Henry VIII under Rowland Lee (Bishop of Lichfield), conducted an aggressive campaign to suppress the endemic lawlessness of the Welsh borders. Lee famously hanged nearly 5,000 felons in his tenure (1534-43). This systematic coercion preceded the Acts of Union (1536, 1543) that formally incorporated Wales into England. The borderland between Wales and England — the "Marches" — had been effectively ungoverned for generations.
