The post-Armada refortification of Plymouth in 1592 drew directly on the experience of 1588, when the English fleet had only narrowly managed to work out of harbour before the Armada rounded the Lizard. The new defences ensured that Plymouth could hold against attack while a fleet within it had time to put to sea. The works formed the basis of the later Royal Citadel built under Charles II.
